What is Jenny-Wren Pet Bereavement Consultancy?

Having lost many pets over the years I know exactly how much it hurts but also, having worked as a veterinary nurse for almost 30 years, just how many people dismiss the impact of pet loss. Jenny-Wren Pet Bereavement Consultancy offers a pet owner a safe and confidential place to talk about pet loss without fear of judgement or dismissal. I will listen, guide and advise a pet owner whether it's after an end of life diagnosis, preparing for euthanasia or after the pet's death.

Why Choose Me?

I feel I have a natural ability to read and understand people and also a real empathy to those experiencing grief. Having lost my grandparents who raised me in my early 20's and suffered miscarriages in my 30s, I feel very comfortable talking about loss and how it affects us and those around us. So when the opportunity arose to study to become a Pet Bereavement Counsellor, I grabbed it with both hands and I am now an Accredited Member of the Association of Pet Bereavement Counsellors.

However, although I am currently only trained in pet bereavement, I am open to discussing human bereavement too if you feel I could help you.

Who am I?

My name is Jane and I have been a veterinary nurse for almost 30 years. I have seen the highs and lows of pet ownership for so many clients over those years, and I have also experienced these highs and lows myself, having offered a forever home to multiple young, old and terminally ill animals alike.

From early on in my career I became passionate about ensuring the euthanasia of a beloved pet was a beautiful goodbye, albeit a hard one as I truly believe euthanasia really is the final act of love and kindness you can show your pet when they are suffering. However, that is often where the support ends and this is wrong. Thankfully I've always been in a position to talk with clients about their loss as I don't find death an awkward conversation.

From my own experience, I know all too well just how painful pet loss can be and what a huge void they leave behind. This pain is often dismissed by those surrounding us, perhaps because it's easier to do that than to try and understand, or perhaps because people don't know what to say. I have always found this puzzling. After all we are all born and will all die so we will all experience loss of some sort; just because this grief is in relation to an animal doesn't make it any less a real feeling and I will always advocate for anyone who feels not heard.

I first met Jane in 2018 when I moved to a different veterinary practice, where she worked as a receptionist and veterinary nurse. Who was Jenny-Wren?

Jenny Wren was a beautiful but bedraggled black and white cat who joined our family in March 2025 at the age of almost 3 years. She had had a very rough start to life and was very timid as a result which had led her to be rehomed a number of times. We were offering her a forever home, as we do with all our animals, be they young, old, shy, opinionated or terminally ill. She settled in well and bonded with Charlie, our 1 year old cat at the time and all seemed well.

However, her health quickly began to decline, she was then diagnosed with lymphoma and within 3 months of her arrival, she was dead. Her death hit me hard as she had flourished and grown in confidence only for it all to be taken away from her by illness and it all seemed so unfair. Therefore when it came to naming my consultancy it felt appropriate to name it after her, as there are simply no rules to the depth of love we have for our pets or the connections we make with them.

So if you are struggling with your loss, know you are not alone. I can offer you a safe space to talk, to let the pain out and to slowly heal. However long it takes, I am here.
